Cumberland County Council on Older Adults has introduced a new community support program focused on improving the lives of older adults with a dementia-related diagnosis and their caregivers. In addition, the program also aims to benefit older adults and their caregivers impacted by social isolation or loneliness, which has been associated with a higher risk of dementia-related diseases.
Components of the program aim to:
1) Address awareness and education by offering a) Alzheimer’s Foundation of America-sponsored memory screenings, b) caregiver classes and community presentations, and c) serving as a local resource for dementia-related concerns;
2) Support caregivers through both virtual and in-person support groups; and
3) Provide tools to assist caregivers in their day-to-day routine including a) Powerful Tools for Caregiver classes, b) Joy for All Companion Pets, and c) Dementia Alliance of NC-sponsored Music and Memory at Home kits
